What Are Chemical Peels?
A peel is a procedure in which a chemical solution is applied to the face to remove the uppermost layers of skin. Some peels work to reverse signs of aging such as sunspots and fine lines; others help manage acne or acne scarring.
Light chemical peels provide brightening, subtle effects with little to no downtime; medium peels can significantly improve skin’s texture and feel in a single treatment.
To avoid potentially damaging or even scarring your skin, you should only undergo chemical peels performed by qualified professionals. Our team of experts headed by Dr. Eliza Sangmuah and Dr. Eugene Sangmuah has been performing chemical peels for years with flawless results.
As a leading provider of aesthetic services in the Matthews, Mint Hill, Indian Trail, Stallings, Monroe and broader Charlotte area, we’re here to help you discover the countless benefits of chemical peels for your skin.
Why Choose The Med Spa at MIM for Chemical Peels?
While chemical peels are considered completely safe, to achieve a successful outcome, they must be administered by someone who can accurately assess your skin’s needs in order to determine the appropriate strength and length of treatment.
You will receive an expert assessment from us, and can always expect cutting-edge treatments performed by our highly skilled team of professionals.
Attempting to perform a chemical peel on yourself at home can result in redness, skin damage or even scarring—in short, we do not recommend it. At our offices, your peel will be performed by a licensed aesthetician with years of experience in the field of chemical exfoliation.

Chemical Peels FAQ
What products or procedures should I avoid before my peel?
A few weeks before your peel, stop using anti-aging products such as retinol and avoid exfoliating your skin unless directed otherwise by your aesthetician.
Are chemical peels safe for darker skin?
In the past, many common chemical peel ingredients were only considered safe for lighter skin (Fitzpatrick types I–III). Now, better formulations mean that peels can be performed on all skin types without risk of hypopigmentation or discoloration. With that said, it’s still essential to choose an aesthetician who is accustomed to working with your skin type.
When will my skin start to peel, and for how long?
Typically, peeling starts 1–2 days after your treatment. It can last anywhere from 1 day to several weeks. After a light chemical peel, you may not experience any peeling at all.
How do I care for my skin after the peel?
While your face heals from the treatment, it’s important to keep your skin moisturized, avoid direct sunlight and picking at your skin. Use products with soothing ingredients, such as calendula, to reduce irritation and follow any other instructions given by your aesthetician.
Can I exercise after getting a peel?
Avoid strenuous activity, saunas and steam rooms for 2–3 days after your treatment as they may prevent your skin from healing correctly.
How many chemical peels will I need?
The number of peels you will need depends on the skin concerns you’d like to address. People simply looking to brighten their skin may only desire one peel, while someone dealing with deep acne scarring or severe hyperpigmentation may schedule peels every four to six weeks until the desired results are achieved. Our team will help you determine realistic expectations and develop a peel schedule to meet your skin’s needs.
