Dermaplaning at The Med Spa at MIM
Dermaplaning, also known as microplaning or blading, is a manual exfoliating technique that involves skimming a special surgical scalpel over the face. By passing the super-sharp blade across your skin at a 45-degree angle, dermaplaning removes vellum (peach fuzz) and dry or damaged skin to reveal refined, healthier skin below.
Dermaplaning also prepares your skin for smoother makeup application and allows for better absorption of skin care products. And by eliminating pore-clogging dead skin, it also reduces your risk of acne breakouts.
Why Choose Us for Dermaplaning?
It’s essential to leave skin care treatments in the capable hands of professionals – especially when that treatment involves a surgical scalpel! Dermaplaning requires a steady hand and the kind of attention to detail that develops only after years of experience.
At our spa, all dermaplaning treatments are performed by a licensed esthetician. The team is led by Dr. Eliza Sangmuah and Dr. Eugene Sangmuah, board-certified physicians who each have more than 25 years of medical experience.
Our promise to you is top-tier cosmetic procedures performed by qualified experts in a safe, medical setting.
Before and After Photos
Please note that the patients featured in these images may have undergone other treatments in conjunction with dermaplaning. This photo gallery does not guarantee that everyone who undergoes dermaplaning will obtain these or similar results.
You’ll see the results of your dermaplaning session immediately after your appointment, but the full effects will appear after 2–3 days. Your smoother, brighter skin will last anywhere from 3 weeks to 1 month, with effects lasting longest if you continue to exfoliate your skin regularly and protect it from the sun.
Who Are the Best Candidates for Dermaplaning?
Dermaplaning offers benefits for almost any skin type and is safe for all skin tones. It can be performed on adults of all ages.
However, it isn’t suitable for people with highly sensitive skin, rosacea, active inflammatory acne, coarse facial hair or for those who take Accutane or blood thinners.
Find out if you’re a good candidate for dermaplaning by booking a no-strings-attached virtual or in-person consultation with one of our experts.
What Can You Treat With Dermaplaning?
Dermaplaning can address many common skin issues including:
- Acne scars
- Dull skin
- Dry skin
- Fine lines
- Sun damage
- Unwanted facial hair
Although your skin will appear noticeably brighter and smoother after a single session, you’ll need to undergo multiple dermaplaning sessions to see significant improvements in scarring, hyperpigmentation, sun damage or fine lines.
What to Expect During Your Dermaplaning Treatment
A dermaplaning treatment is a relaxing experience that takes 20–30 minutes. First, you will lie down on a comfortable treatment table. Once you’re settled in, a registered esthetician will use a dermaplaning tool to gently scrape your entire face, removing dead or damaged skin cells and peach fuzz. When finished, she will apply a soothing moisturizer and sunscreen.
After the session, you may experience minor redness that will resolve within a few hours. Avoid wearing makeup as it’s best to let your skin breathe for the rest of the day. Because your newly exposed skin will be extra sensitive to the sun, you are advised to apply a sunscreen containing at least 30 SPF every day for 1 week afterward.
Complementary and Alternative Treatments
Not sure if dermaplaning is right for you? We offer several other effective procedures to help you achieve a radiant complexion:
- Chemical peels use gentle acid solutions to remove the topmost layer of skin, revealing healthier skin beneath; you can even combine dermaplaning with a chemical peel for an even deeper exfoliation
- Our microdermabrasion services also provide exfoliation – with no scalpels or chemicals
- Microneedling addresses sun damage, uneven texture and scarring with more significant—albeit less immediate—results
How much does Dermaplaning cost in the Charlotte area?
The price of dermaplaning varies from provider to provider and depends greatly on the reputation of the establishment. At your consultation, we’ll discuss dermaplaning costs and any other questions you might have before proceeding with the treatment.
All our services are led by Dr. Eugene Sangmuah and Dr. Eliza Sangmuah, physicians with extensive medical backgrounds. You’re in good hands!

Is dermaplaning the same as shaving your face?
No. Dermaplaning uses a special medical-grade scalpel that’s far sharper and more precise than a razor blade. The exfoliation provided by a professional dermaplaning session is therefore greater than that of shaving your face at home.
Does dermaplaning hurt?
No. When performed by an experienced professional, dermaplaning is entirely painless and carries minimal risk of injury.
Are there side effects?
Dermaplaning, when performed by professionals in a safe environment, has no serious side effects. Minor, transient redness may appear just after your session. Some people develop whiteheads on their skin a day or two after (what’s known as purging), but these typically resolve quickly.
A lack of proper hygiene protocols during the procedure can result in unwanted side effects such as infection or fungal acne. This is why it’s crucial to choose a trustworthy clinic for your dermaplaning treatment.
Does facial hair grow back thicker or darker after dermaplaning?
No, this is a common misconception. After dermaplaning your face, your hair will grow back with the same color and thickness.
What’s the difference between dermaplaning and microdermabrasion?
Both services manually exfoliate the face. However, dermaplaning employs a special scalpel to do so, while microdermabrasion uses a diamond-tipped device. As microdermabrasion involves more pressure, it’s considered the more aggressive of the two treatments.
