What is Botox?
Botox is the first FDA-approved treatment used for the reduction of frown lines, forehead lines and moderate to severe crow’s feet. The Botox formula consists of a neuromodulator derived from ‘Clostridium Botulinum,’ a rod-shaped bacteriu naturally found in lakes, soil and forests.
How does Botox work?
Botox works by interfering with the signal between nerves and muscles. This interference prevents muscles from contracting as often, and this helps wrinkles relax and eventually soften.
How is the Botox treatment performed?
Botox is delivered through several injections using a very thin and short needle. The treatment normally takes 10 minutes or less, depending on the number of areas you’d like to treat.
The practitioners at The Med Spa at Matthews Internal Medicine are highly skilled at placing Botox injections. They know exactly where to administer the injections and exactly how much of the product to use to achieve the desired results.
The needle used to deliver Botox is very small and most patients only experience a small pinch during their injections. For patients who are very sensitive to pain, a numbing solution can be applied.
It will take between 24-48 hours for the results to begin, and the full effects won’t be apparent until 3-10 days after your treatment. You can expect diminished lines and folds for up to four months. As time passes, the effects will gradually wear off, and you’ll notice your wrinkles and folds slowly begin to reappear.
There is no downtime following a Botox treatment. You may experience some redness at the treatment sites, but this normally disappears within an hour or two.
When administered by a medical professional with extensive training, Botox will never cause a stiff or frozen appearance. Some talk about the effects of Botox as “paralyzing” your facial muscles. In reality, the formula only partially inhibits muscle movement.
You’ll still be able to express emotions, your skin just won’t be pulled or manipulated into positions where lines and wrinkles deepen.
