What are dermal fillers?
Dermal fillers are a gel-like solution delivered to areas of the face to restore lost volume or add additional volume to improve facial contours. Once in place, fillers add lost volume and help restore a person’s youthful fullness. Even more importantly, fillers stimulate your body to produce new collagen and elastin, the results of which last even after your body has absorbed the dermal filler.
As you age, your body loses much of the collagen and elastin that keep your skin plump, firm, and youthful. Without that padding, your skin begins to sag into fine lines, wrinkles, and folds.
Where can dermal fillers be used?
Dermal fillers can be used to treat a wide range of areas on the body, such as:
- Deep wrinkles
- Under-eye area
- Nasolabial lines, a.k.a. smile lines
- Forehead and crow’s feet
- Chest or decolletage
What types of dermal fillers are offered?
We currently offer the following types of fillers:
Juvederm Dermal fillers provide a smooth, long-lasting correction of moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds. It is also used for lip procedures; it can enhance lip size, shape, and border. Juvederm is an FDA-approved injectable treatment that is made of hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance that is used often due to its volumizing properties. It is known to hold up to 1,000 times its volume in water!
Juvederm Volbella XC is the first and only filler proven to increase lip fullness and soften the appearance of vertical lip lines for up to 1 year.
Kybella™ is the first and only non-surgical option on the market to treat the double-chin area. The active ingredient in Kybella™ is deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. When it is injected into the fat beneath your chin, the solution causes the destruction of fat cells, causing the cells to be destroyed and unable to store or accumulate fat.
Voluma XC is the first and only FDA-approved injectable gel for the cheek area. This gel contains a naturally occurring substance called hyaluronic acid which helps to restore a more youthful profile. A form of Juvéderm, but thicker in consistency, Voluma is a hyaluronic acid-based filler designed to help correct volume loss in the middle part of the face. It can provide you contour and a subtle lift for up to two years with optimal treatment.

Dermal Filler FAQ
The filler treatment process is not painful. You should feel little more than a slight pinch during your injections. If you have a very low pain tolerance, a numbing cream or ice can help numb the treatment area.
The professionals at The Med Spa at Matthews Internal Medicine are skilled at placing these injections in the optimal position and at the proper depth to improve the results and minimize discomfort during the treatment.
A filler procedure normally takes 15-30 minutes from start to finish.
There is no downtime following a microdermabrasion treatment. However, you may experience some mild redness in the treated area for several hours following the procedure. You can return to your normal skin care routine and apply cosmetics immediately following the treatment.
